Scientists have found the contents of the last meal consumed by the earliest animals known to inhabit Earth more than 550 million years ago. Scientists from The Australian National University analysed a fossilised specimen of the slug-like Kimberella from the Ediacaran period. The team detected phytosterol molecules, a type of fat found in plants, preserved in the creature’s gut.
