Global Sikh Council organizes traditional Gatka event

Gatkabaaz from 14 Gatka Akharas showcases martial art skills


Chandigarh, April 3 (Gurjit Singh Bhoday ) Aiming to preserve and promote Sikh heritage the 7th ‘Virsa Sambhal’ Gatka competition was organized by the International Sikh Martial Arts Council and Global Sikh Sports Federation under the aegis of Global Sikh Council. This event was dedicated to Hola Mohalla in which 14 prominent Gatka Akharas took part and were awarded with cash prizes by the Sikh Martial Arts Council.

Disclosing this here on Sunday, Baljit Singh Saini, Secretary, International Sikh Martial Arts Council informed that this traditional event was organized under the guidance of Harjeet Singh Grewal, State Award winner, who is Chairman of Global Sikh Sports Federation and sports committee of the Global Sikh Council.

Giving more details he added that this Gatka oturnament was inaugurated by chief guest Paramjit Singh Lakhewal, member Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee in the presence of vice-chairman of International Sikh Martial Arts Council Avtar Singh Patiala, Baba Bakhshish Singh Mahorana, Baba Sher Singh and vice president of National Gatka Association of India Dr. Pritam Singh who is also Director Sports at Sant Baba Bhag Singh University Jalandhar.

He informed that in this Gatka event Ekas Ke Hum Barik Gatka Akhara Mundi Kharar, Mohali, Baba Fateh Singh Gatka Akhara Sector 40 Chandigarh, Khalsa Gatka Academy Shahbad Markanda, Haryana, Kalgidhar Gatka Akhara Bhambri, Fatehgarh Sahib, Mata Harsharan Kaur Gatka Akhara Fatehgarh Sahib, Baba Deep Singh Gatka Akhara Kharar, Dhan Guru Gobind Singh Ji Gatka Akhara Rupnagar, Shaheed Baba Jeevan Singh Gatka Akhara Morinda, Sant Baba Bhag Singh Gatka Academy Jalandhar, Amar Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Gatka Akhara Baroli, Mohali, Baba Teja Singh Ji Gatka Akhara Jalalabad East, Moga, Bhai Sangat Singh Gatka Akhara Samrala, Baba Bachitar Singh Ji Gatka Akhara Patiala, Baba Zorawar Singh ji Baba Fateh Singh ji Gatka Akhara Hoshiarpur showcased their martial art skills and mesmerized the audience.

Among others present on the occasion included Jasmer Singh secretary Gurdwara Shri Guru Harrai Sahib Ji Mundi Kharar, Lakhvir Singh Khalsa Hoshiarpur, Sukhchain Singh General Secretary Haryanvi Gatka Association, Rajdeep Singh General Secretary Chandigarh Gatka Association, Bibi Manjit Kaur, President District Gatka Association Rupnagar, Bibi Balwinder Kaur Fatehgarh Sahib, Jaswinder Kaur Morinda, Gurpreet Singh, Jasvir Singh Rupnagar, Gurvinder Singh Ghanoli, Jaspreet Singh Lodimajra, Yograj Singh, Harbinder Singh and Vijay Pratap Singh (all Gatka coaches) were also present.
