Peru shuts Machu Picchu amid anti-govt protests, tourists stranded

Peru indefinitely shut the famed ancient ruins of Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail leading up to the site on Saturday amid anti-government protests. The Culture Ministry said the decision was taken “to protect the safety of tourists and the population in general”. A minister claimed 417 visitors, including over 300 foreigners, were stuck at Machu Picchu.
